afety Valve Seat Materials: Stellite vs 13Cr vs Hard Alloy

2026-06-03

The seat sealing surface is critical for bubble‑tight shut‑off. Three common materials are 13Cr stainless steel, Stellite cobalt alloy, and hard alloys like tungsten carbide. The wrong choice leads to early leakage or galling. The main safety valve product names of China Safety Valve Network include:GA49H-DN20 Pulse Safety Valve,High Temperature and Pressure Fall Lift Safety Valve,Hydraulic Safety Valve,Impulse Safety Valve,Impulse Spring Safety Valve,JIS Safety Valve,Main Safety Valve,Overflow ValveOil Refining Specific Safety Valve,Pulse Safety Valve

13Cr (e.g., 410/420 stainless steel)
Lowest cost, good machinability. Suitable for clean, non‑corrosive water, air, oil at room temperature. Weakness: low hardness (HRC35-40), poor galling resistance. Above 250°C hardness drops, and it rusts in wet or sour services. Use only for low‑pressure, non‑corrosive, ≤200°C applications.

Stellite (Co‑Cr‑W alloy, e.g., Stellite 6, 21)
The most common hardfacing for safety valves. Hardness HRC38-45, excellent red hardness (retains strength at 600°C), good galling and erosion resistance. Ideal for steam, high‑temperature gas, mildly corrosive media. Higher cost and requires skilled welding. For superheated steam above 350°C, Stellite is the first choice.

Hard Alloy (tungsten carbide, nickel‑based)
Very high hardness (HRC65-75), outstanding wear resistance against solid particles. For slurries, catalyst, ash‑laden services. Downside: brittle, can chip under impact, and less corrosion resistant than Stellite. Only use when hard particles are present.

Quick Selection Guide

ServiceSeat MaterialReason
Ambient water/air 13Cr Low cost, sufficient
Saturated steam Stellite Galling resistance
Superheated steam >350°C Stellite Red hardness
Particle‑laden media Hard alloy Wear resistance
Strong acids/alkalis Stellite or Hastelloy Corrosion resistance

Bottom line: Select seat material by temperature and media. 13Cr for cheap steam‑free duty, Stellite for steam, hard alloy for solids. Right material doubles service life.
