Safety Valve Installation: On Vessel vs. On Piping
Safety Valve Installation: On Vessel vs. On Piping
Safety valves are typically installed at the top of pressure vessels or on connecting piping. Each position has pros and cons. The wrong choice can compromise relief reliability. The main safety valve product names of China Safety Valve Network include:Built-in Safety Valve,Butterfly Spring Type Safety Valve,Copper Safety Valve,Duplex Safety Valve,Double Lever Safety Valve,Explosion Wave Proof Safety Valve,F2-250/400 Main Safety Valve,Fan Engine Safety Valve,Freezer-used Safety Valve,Gas Specific Fall Lift Safety Valve,GA49H-DN20 Pulse Safety Valve,High Temperature and Pressure Fall Lift Safety Valve,Hydraulic Safety Valve,Impulse Safety Valve,Impulse Spring Safety Valve.
Vessel top: preferred, but limited
Top installation is ideal – the valve directly vents vapour, giving the fastest response. For steam, gas, or flashing liquids, top mounting ensures a vapour‑phase inlet. Drawbacks: limited overhead space and heavy valves require extra support.
Piping: acceptable with conditions
When top mounting is impossible (due to agitators, tube bundles, or tight space), the valve may be installed on the vessel outlet piping if: (1) the fluid is a homogeneous gas or vapour, and (2) pressure loss between vessel and valve ≤3% of set pressure. Do not use on lines that may collect liquid or solids.
Common errors
Installing at a low point where liquid can accumulate – the valve inlet becomes liquid‑filled, dropping capacity.
Inlet pipe too long or with too many elbows – pressure loss exceeds 3%, delaying opening.
Mounting on a vibrating line (e.g., reciprocating pump discharge) – disc flutter damages the seat.
Rule of thumb: Vessel top is the best location. If piping is the only option, use long‑radius elbows, limit pressure loss, and keep pipe length ≤8 pipe diameters from the vessel outlet.
Bottom line: Install safely on top. If you must use piping, control pressure drop and avoid liquid traps. Wrong position makes even a large valve useless.
