Four Key Points for Safety Valve Installation
As the ultimate protection device for pressure vessels, the installation position and method of safety valves directly impact relief effectiveness and system safety. The following four points must be observed when installing safety valves:The main safety valve product names of China Safety Valve Network include:Freezer-used Safety Valve,Gas Specific Fall Lift Safety Valve,GA49H-DN20 Pulse Safety Valve,High Temperature and Pressure Fall Lift Safety Valve,Hydraulic Safety Valve,Impulse Safety Valve,Impulse Spring Safety Valve,JIS Safety Valve,Main Safety Valve
1. Correct Installation Location
When a vessel contains both vapor and liquid phases, the safety valve must be installed in the vapor phase. This is because safety valves are designed based on gas or steam relief characteristics. Installation in the liquid phase can cause issues such as liquid hammer and inadequate relief capacity, severely compromising protection effectiveness.
2. Flammable Medium Discharge Requirements
When a safety valve is used to relieve flammable liquids, its outlet must be connected to an emergency tank (dump tank). Direct atmospheric discharge is strictly prohibited. If the relieved medium is high-temperature flammable material, the receiving vessel must have appropriate protective measures such as cooling systems or explosion-proof features to prevent secondary disasters.
3. Vent Stack Setting Specifications
For general media (non-toxic, non-flammable), safety valves may vent locally to atmosphere, but must meet the following safety distance requirements:
-
The vent outlet must be elevated at least 1 meter above operator access levels;
-
The vent outlet must not face ignition sources, spark-emitting areas, or high-temperature equipment within 15 meters;
-
For indoor equipment or vessels, the safety valve vent must extend through the roof and project at least 2 meters above the roofline to prevent accumulation of flammable gases.
4. Inlet Isolation Valve Management
If an isolation valve (such as a stop valve or gate valve for maintenance) is installed at the safety valve inlet, the following conditions must be met:
-
The valve must remain in the fully open position under normal operating conditions;
-
The valve position must be sealed with lead or locked to prevent inadvertent closure;
-
This ensures the safety valve is always ready for service and prevents human error from disabling the protection device.
Proper adherence to these four points ensures safety valves function as intended, providing reliable overpressure protection for personnel and equipment.
